We have now to consider the Governor's

suggestion that Mr. Irving's retirement may be

allowed to date from the 24th July instead of the

23rd, in view of the fact that his birthday falls

on the 24th and the alteration would reduce the

amount of the loss of Widows and Orphans pension

resulting from the reduced contribution.

Mr. Harding has been kind enough to help with

this point, and he has explained that according to

the tables attached to the Hong Kong ordinance, the proposed postponement of the date of retirement would effect very slight increase in the prospec-

tive pension.

The necessary extension of leave for one day would have to be without salary presumably, and it would mean a loss of one day's pension to Mr. Irving. It is not possible to complete the actual · increase to the prospective pension of the widow
